When your phone screen cracks, one of the first questions you'll face is: should I go for an OEM screen or a third-party replacement? It sounds technical, but the choice matters — it affects how your phone looks, feels, and performs for the months and years ahead.

At Mobex in North Finchley, we use quality components on every repair and we're transparent with customers about what goes into their device. Here's what you need to know before making a decision.

What Does "OEM" Actually Mean?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM screen is made by the same manufacturer — or to the same exact specifications — as the screen your phone came with from the factory. For iPhones, this means Apple-sourced parts; for Samsung, it means Samsung-manufactured displays.

OEM screens are typically used by authorised repair centres or supplied through official channels. They match the original in every measurable way: colour accuracy, brightness, touch sensitivity, and hardware integration.

What Are Third-Party (Aftermarket) Screens?

Third-party screens are manufactured by companies other than the original device maker. They range widely in quality — from screens that are virtually indistinguishable from OEM to cheap imitations that look and feel noticeably different from day one.

There are broadly three tiers of aftermarket screens:

  1. Premium / OEM-grade aftermarket — High-quality components that closely match the original in display quality, colour, and durability. Often the best option for budget-conscious repairs when sourced carefully.
  2. Mid-grade aftermarket — Acceptable quality for most everyday use but may have slightly reduced brightness, colour accuracy, or touch response.
  3. Budget / low-grade — The cheapest option. These screens often look "washed out," have poor touch response, and may develop faults within weeks. Avoid these.

OEM vs Third-Party: Side-by-Side Comparison

FeatureOEM ScreenQuality AftermarketBudget Aftermarket
Colour accuracy Identical to original Very close Often washed out
Brightness Full nits as specified Near-identical Noticeably dimmer
Touch response Perfect Very good Lag or dead spots possible
True Tone / Face ID Fully supported Partial (device-dependent) Often broken
Durability High Good Low — may fail quickly
Cost Higher Mid-range Lowest

Does It Matter for iPhones?

Yes — especially for newer models. Apple has introduced software locks that can cause issues when non-OEM screens are fitted. From iPhone 12 onwards, True Tone and certain display health notifications may appear in Settings if the screen serial number doesn't match Apple's records. From iPhone 13+, Face ID can stop functioning entirely if the screen is not properly paired to the device.

This doesn't mean third-party screens can't work on iPhones — it means you need a skilled technician with the right tools who sources quality parts and handles the software pairing correctly.

💡 Tip: If you have an iPhone 12 or newer, always ask your repair shop what parts they use and whether True Tone and Face ID will be preserved. A reputable shop will tell you upfront.

Does It Matter for Samsung Phones?

Samsung AMOLED screens are some of the best displays ever fitted to a smartphone — deep blacks, vivid colours, and high refresh rates. The gap between genuine Samsung panels and aftermarket alternatives can be very noticeable, especially if you use your phone in bright sunlight or enjoy watching videos.

For Samsung S-series and Z-series devices, we strongly recommend OEM-grade or premium aftermarket panels. For older Samsung A-series models, a good quality aftermarket screen is often fine and keeps repair costs reasonable.

What Does Mobex Use?

At Mobex, we stock OEM and premium-grade replacement screens for the most common iPhone and Samsung models. We'll always be upfront with you about what type of screen goes into your device and give you options where they exist. We don't fit budget parts — we'd rather explain the cost difference than have a repair come back in 3 weeks.

All screen repairs at Mobex come with a 1-year warranty on parts and labour. If anything goes wrong with the screen we fitted, we fix it — no charge.

The Bottom Line

  • OEM screens are the gold standard but cost more.
  • Premium aftermarket screens are a solid choice for most repairs, especially on older devices.
  • Cheap budget screens are a false economy — they often fail quickly and can cause further problems.
  • For iPhone 12+ and Samsung AMOLED flagships, always prioritise quality parts.
